More Splogs

I've updated and added more splogs to my previous list of splogs. Google is indeed deleting some splogs so I will keep reporting them. The total count from this batch is over 227,000 live splogs. Group 2 has been merged into 7 since there were lot of dupes in the list. I've also changed the file name convention and dropped the .blogspot.com domain name from the file itself. I think the patterns in splog host names are easier to see without the domain name.

Big Batch of Splogs

Here is a big batch of splogs I've managed to extract using some new code I've been working on. Combined total splog count is over 150,000. Some of these splogs are quite trickly. Many of them are cloaked meaning they appear to be 404 dead blog page but underneath it is a link farm in attempt to jack up Google search engine rankings. I'm also seeing a rise in redirected splogs and I'm working on some code to identify those in mass number.

I see that Google has been deleting quite a large number of splogs but even then they are on average about 20% effective. What that means is if a single spammer creates 1000 splogs, Google will eventually delete at most about 200 of them leaving 800 alone. Obvously this is rather poor percentage and hopefully my efforts will bump up that figure close to 90% and above.

Visualizing Splogs

I decided to have some fun with GD library and generate something visual representation to gauge daily splog activities. Even though the images below look like some corrupted image file but it's really a graph of daily splog activity. Every pixel represents a blog ping during that day. Blogs are sorted alphabetically from top left to bottom right. The background black pixel represents fairly normal blog. Red pixel represents a potential splog. The brighter the red, more likely it's a splog. Horizontal streaks represent a block of splogs generated by one spammer. White pixels are blogs that show excessive characteristics of splogs far beyond bright red. Of course this is just a visual representation of just one algorithm I'm working on.

I can see that Friday was relatively light day compared to Saturday. On Friday, I see exceptionally long red streaks which means one spammer just went all out that day. Also I see that Thursday's splogs were much more scattered than other days. The sheer amount of data is just way too much to make sense out of by just looking at pages of numbers so this sort of visualization is really only way to do it effectively.

I'm Back!

Wow! Time flies. It's been almost two months and three weeks since I posted anything here. Actually I've been back for the last two weeks trying to catch up with some data collecting efforts. I've had two power supply units, couple sticks of ram, and one hard drive go bad on me during the the last two months but I have mostly recovered from that by juggling some spare parts and getting some new replacements. I've also solved my file hosting problem as well and I will make that announcement when time comes to post some analysis results. All systems go! I will resume where I left off in a day or two.

Current Status

It has been a rather busy two weeks since I've posted a big batch of splogs but to my surprise Google has done very little with them. It appears most of them have gone untouched. Only thing Google has done is they selectively blocked AdSense ads from showing up on the splogs I've posted but spammer's AdSense account remains active. The AdSense ads on splogs in blogspot.com is no longer showing but it continues to show ads everywhere else.

Although I can't go into the details but lets just say that I've accidentally discovered Google's new method of deterring splogs. Initially I thought this was a very good thing but the more I thought about it I find the measure to be too late and mostly ineffective. I had a suspicion that Google has quietly implemented some sort of bulk splog deletion measures few weeks ago but I couldn't quite put my finger on how it worked because it was somewhat of a hit and miss. The one problem I see is they have set the threshhold for this bulk splog deletion to kick in at very high splog numbers. Also this deterrent depends on a false assumptions about how spammers create these splogs. I know for fact some bulk splog creation tool already has countermeasures in place for months now and this explains why Google's new bulk splog deletion routine has been somewhat ineffective. Also it doesn't do anything for more than a million splogs that already exist in Blogger already. Anyway, I suppose it's still better than nothing so that's why I've chosen not to discuss the details.

It appears I've hit the maximum numbers of files allowed in my Google Pages account which is 100. I will have to come up with some other way to make my splog list available to public. Anyone have any ideas?

UPDATE (5/23/2006 11:50pm) - Someone has contacted me regarding one false positive in #44. Here is a typical AdSense spammer who created 8165 splogs all pointing to his website with an AdSense ad. Every one of his blogs aren't really blog at all but rather a static page with a link and an email address. His AdSense id is pub-9004570362789198.

AdSense Spammer #7 and #10 Revisited

It turns out tactics and methods used by both of these two past AdSense spammers are so similar, they are indistinguishable and therefore my only conclusion is that they have to be the same person or at least working together on their spamming efforts. I've also noticed that there are some crossovers in the target website and AdSense ids from the two groups. I will merge the two list into one as result. Although he mainly uses one AdSense id pub-8886102306252551, he also uses pub-9284117370015193 as well as pub-5377259689954952 in his 9976 domains. This spammer created nearly 10,000 made for AdSense websites each with thousands of pages and also created over 130,000 splogs on blogspot.com. There are currently 134,898 splogs in my database with his unique fingerprint on them but I know I didn't catch all of his splogs. My script will needs more tweaking to extract rest of his splogs from my database and that will take some time.
